In Indonesia, there are about 18 million elderly people. This constitutes 7.8% of the total population. As many as 25% of the elderly suffer from degenerative diseases and live dependent on others. Urinary incontinence (IU) is a condition of loss of urinary control that causes a person to urinate or defecate without taking into account the accuracy of time and place. As many as 24.6% of the elderly population in Indonesia have a history of chronic diseases. Of this number, as many as 15-20% of the elderly are affected by urinary incontinence. The number of patients with this chronic medical condition or those in nursing homes can reach 70%. The prevalence of urinary incontinence increases with age. Although urinary incontinence is not a life-threatening condition, it can affect quality of life as it can interfere with daily activities, interpersonal and sexual relationships, psychological health, and social interactions.
Dr. Kindy Aulia, Sp. In handling this problem, a comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) approach is needed.4 This is done because incontinence is a health problem that affects the social, emotional, activity and health conditions of the elderly. Therefore, the support and role of family and loved ones is very important to help patients accept and deal with their problems. Families can play a role in encouraging the elderly to change their lifestyle such as weight loss, stop smoking and start doing physical activity. Then, conduct behavioral therapy, such as helping with prompted voiding, habit training and scheduled toileting. In addition to family support and motivation, health care for the elderly is also important, such as providing a healthy diet and maintaining hygiene."
