Fasting is an act of worship that every Muslim must perform in the month of Ramadan. Those who fast must endure hunger, thirst and other things that cancel out until the time of breaking the fast, which is approximately 12 hours. However, there are some groups of people who are not obliged to fast in the holy month of Ramadan.

People who are allowed not to fast Ramadan certainly consider the legal requirements of fasting to be related to the health of each person. So, you must know who is not allowed to fast during Ramadan.

People who are allowed not to fast

Every Muslim is required to fast in the holy month of Ramadan. However, there are some groups of people who are not obliged to fast. Here are the groups or classes of people in question:

1. Sick people

If someone is sick or has certain health conditions that make fasting harmful to their health or worsen their condition. Sick people who fast can actually slow down the healing process. So they are allowed not to fast. This includes conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, digestive disorders, and other medical conditions.

2. Elderly

Very old or infirm people who are unable to endure hunger and thirst during the fast are allowed not to fast. They must then pay a fidyah (compensatory payment) or make up for the missed fast.

3. Pregnant and breastfeeding mothers

Pregnant or breastfeeding mothers who are worried that fasting may harm their own health or that of the baby they are carrying or breastfeeding, are allowed not to fast. However, pregnant and breastfeeding mothers must make up the fast and pay the fidyah.

4. Musafir

The next person who is not obliged to fast is the Musafir. Musafir or someone who is traveling a long distance with a distance of more than 89 km, they are allowed not to fast. This is because they fear that fasting may make the journey difficult or dangerous. However, they must make up the missed fasts at a later date.

5. People who are menstruating

Women who are menstruating or in postpartum puerperium are not obliged to fast in Ramadan. This is because one of the valid requirements for fasting is to be clean or pure from menstruation and postpartum bleeding. However, they can substitute other days outside of Ramadan.

6. The insane

Fasting is not obligatory for the insane, even if they are adults. This is because insane people do not have normal and healthy minds. An insane person who fasts is certainly not valid, because one of the requirements for fasting is to be of sound mind.
